I’m Clare, teacher and founder of The Hypnobirth Company.
Everyone’s hypnobirthing journey starts differently. Mine started when I was pregnant with my son.
I was the first of my friends to be having a baby and started nosey-ing around the internet looking for information. During my many (many) hours of research, I was shocked to discover that you didn’t have to give birth on your back. In fact, outside of film and TV not many people gave birth on their backs.
What’s more, I learned that labour didn’t have to be painful, and that I had choices available to me about my care. That’s how I stumbled across hypnobirthing, and the rest, as they say, is history.
In many ways, the strangest thing about hypnobirthing is the name.
Hypnobirthing is actually a very logical approach to preparing for birth. I loved hearing about the physiology of my body and how it was designed not just to grow my baby, but also birth my baby safely and efficiently. My husband, who was my birth partner, relished having a valuable role in the birth. Calming relaxations and breathing techniques were a great resource during pregnancy, and by the time my waters broke in the middle of the night, two days after my due date, we were both feeling prepared, calm and confident.
After having my son, I felt like I’d discovered an amazing secret that everyone needed to know about. I wanted to run up to pregnant women, tell them how beautiful they are and how amazing their body is, and that birth isn’t something to be feared. It can be a wonderfully empowering experience and an incredible foundation to be starting off on this new, exciting parenting journey.
But what I love most about hypnobirthing is that it’s individual to you.
You can learn the tools and understand how to navigate the NHS ‘system’, but by understanding your options you can make the best decisions for you and your family. No pain relief? Great! Everything a hospital can offer you? Great! It’s your body, your baby, and your birth.
